My name is Matthew Schlener. I was born the sixth and youngest of a military family. We moved overseas when I was 7 years old and European culture influenced my lifestyle today. I experienced the atmosphere of a local coffee shop and the relationship that the barista had with the community. At 9 years of age a spark was ignited to work in the coffee business. As a kid I would visit my mom’s side of the family in Peru. My mom was born there and I still have relatives that live in the capital city of Lima.
While attending Northern Virginia Community College, I started working in the coffee industry. Initially just a dishwasher, I slowly worked my way up until becoming general manager of a specialty coffee shop.
God has been a stronghold in my life since I was 10 years old. I lost my mom to cancer that same year. She was such an inspiration to me and I have a desire to eventually move to Peru and become closer to my family that lives there.
After praying about where God was leading me, it was apparent that God was preparing me to go to Peru to start Rhiza Coffee Co! I am thrilled to be a part of a project that positively influences young adults that are at Luz de Vida Casa Hogar. More details below!
