Hello, I am not an official resident of New Market but I spend most of my time in this historic town. I am the pastor at New Market UMC and for the past 11 years I have loved being engaged in this community. I have the privilege of serving many families in the New Market area through our church, our HOPE preschool, and through town events. My wife Donna and I transplanted here from Western PA 35 years ago. Yes, I am still a Pittsburgh fan
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My wife Donna and I share ministry and a life together. We have 3 children, Meghan and her husband Jake who reside in Mantachie MS with our three grand children, Atticus, Fletcher, and Evelyn. Our daughter Hannah and son Caleb still reside in Frederick. We love to hang out together, attend local plays and music venues, and to participate in local New Market events.
Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I met my wife Donna while working together in the sacred halls of K-Mart. I then owned a hardware store and plumbing business in PA. We moved to MD where I became a licensed Electrician for 25 years until I answered my call to ministry. I still think I may have one or two other careers in my still. I love to serve, be in relationship with, and to love people.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
11 years
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
There are a lot of interesting and fascinating people here in New Market, but I have to say no one holds a candle to June Snowden. She knows everything past, present, and future of the workings of this town
Q: What advice would you give to people?
Everyone is going through something, no matter who you meet and in whatever circumstances, be kind, be patient, and be present.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
In the spring of 2020 I had tickets to go to the Holy Land, we all know that did not happen. I would like to get there this year or next.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
This community has a great vibe of collective caring for each other. During the pandemic (are we out of that yet?), the residents of the town joined forces with our church to provide food, monetary aid, and compassion. It was and still is a great thing to be apart of.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
In the next 5 I would like to still be serving folks in the New Market area. After that, on a farm with Donna and our grandchildren.
Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
I like to push my comfort zone, so when we first moved to this area I tried out for live theater without any prior experience. I had parts in Man for All Seasons, Amadeus, and played Sargent Toomey in Biloxi Blues. I also sang the National Anthem at a Keys game and did a few episodes on home repair for a local television show.
Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
I think all places have beauty to them, but I especially enjoyed the Island of Culebra, PR, during a recent mission trip.
Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
October in a tree stand, Thanksgiving, no gifts needed but the gift of togetherness, Easter Sunday of course.
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
HOPE Preschool, Prospect Pantry, 5 West, Vintage, Derby. I think I covered it. Gift cards can be sent to my home address.
Q: What person, event or experience has made the greatest impact or inspiration in your life?
Without a doubt my spouse Donna.
Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Belonging, Rest, Shalom
